The Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer

On 27th May 2025, the Istanbul Bar Association successfully hosted the first international colloquium on the European Convention for the Protection of the Legal Profession.

The event brought together presidents of bar associations, legal professionals, and institutional representatives from various European countries and across Türkiye. Discussions focused on the legal, institutional, and political guarantees necessary for the effective protection of the independence of lawyers and bar associations.

On 27 May, participants of the Colloquium adopted the "Istanbul Declaration", which recalls and affirms the fundamental principles enshrined in the draft European Convention adopted by the Council of Europe. The declaration:

    Reiterates the importance of legal guarantees for the independence of the legal profession and professional associations,
    Denounces unlawful interference, threats, or retaliatory procedures against lawyers for acts related to the exercise of their profession,
    Calls for the immediate ratification and implementation of the Convention by the Republic of Türkiye,
    Demands the withdrawal of all proceedings initiated against Istanbul Bar Association President Prof. Dr. İbrahim Kaboğlu, the members of the Bar Council, and Council Member Me Fırat Epözdemir, who is subject to a separate criminal case.

Colloquium international sur la Convention européenne pour la protection de la profession d’avocat : une réussite au Barreau d’Istanbul

Le 27 mai 2025, le Barreau d’Istanbul a organisé avec succès le premier colloquium international concernant la Convention Européenne sur la Protection de la Profession d'Avocat.

L’événement a rassemblé des bâtonniers, responsables institutionnels et confrères venus de toute la Turquie et de nombreux pays européens. Les travaux ont porté sur les garanties juridiques, institutionnelles et politiques nécessaires à la protection effective de l’indépendance des avocats et de leurs ordres professionnels.

Le 27 mai, les participants au Colloque ont également adopté la "Déclaration d’Istanbul", qui rappelle et affirme les principes fondamentaux contenus dans le projet de Convention européenne adopté par le Conseil de l’Europe. Cette déclaration :
•    Réaffirme la nécessité de garanties juridiques fortes pour l’indépendance de la profession d’avocat et de ses institutions ;
•    Condamne les ingérences, pressions ou poursuites engagées contre les avocats pour des actes liés à leur exercice professionnel ;
•    Appelle la République de Turquie à signer, ratifier et mettre en œuvre la Convention sans délai ;
•    Demande l’abandon des poursuites contre le Bâtonnier Professeur Dr. İbrahim Kaboğlu, les membres du Conseil de l’Ordre et le membre du Conseil Me Fırat Epözdemir poursuivi par une affaire pénale distincte.
