Dear President,
Dear Colleague,
In light of the situation presently unfolding in Afghanistan, the European Bars Federation, which represents 250 Bar Associations and more than 1.000.000 lawyers, promoting the Rule of Law and the defense of Human rights in Europe and worldwide, expresses its grave concern about the political and social unrest, and deteriorated security following the return to power of the Taliban in this country.

We are extremely worried about the Afghans – particularly women and girls at risk, who will once again be the victims of a fundamentalist, retrograded and autocratic vision of life in society. They deserve to live in safety, security and dignity. Any form of discrimination and abuse should be prevented.

The European Bars Federation supports lawyers and Judges in Afghanistan and calls upon the Taliban regime to respect the Rule of Law following international standards with respect for human rights.

The international community must immediately abandon its current position of non–belligerence towards the Taliban regime and demands respect for human rights, standing ready to ensure that their voices can be heard.

According to the initiative of the Barcelona Bar Association, founder member of our Federation, we have organized a gathering on the situation in Afghanistan to be held next Monday 6 September, at 12.00 PM CEST at the premises of the Bar Association, where we shall be reading a joint statement regarding the regression of rights in Afghanistan.

Therefore, we call upon all the European Bars to join this action by gathering in front of their respective Bars.

With my best wishes.
Dominique ATTIAS
President FBE
